Instructions for Using Encyclopedia Virginia's Google Cardboard

  • Headset Assembly Instructional Video
  • On your smart phone (connected to wifi for better experience), download the “Google Street View” app from the Google Play or Apple App Store.
  • When you open the app you can look at different places by through three different mechanisms:
    • “Explore" (which is a more organic way to discover content by zooming and panning the map)
    • “Collections" (which are curated thematically-based areas), and
    • “Search” which allows you to manually type in a location.
    "Explore"
    "Collections"
    "Search"
  • For places created by Encyclopedia Virginia such as Gunston Hall, James Madison’s Montpelier, and James Monroe’s Ash Lawn-Highland, etc., it is probably best to use "Search" to find them.
  • When you choose a place to visit in the app, touch the image that appears in the bottom of the screen and it will take you inside that place.

  • If you don't see a “goggle” icon appear at the top right corner, tap the screen again and it should appear. Touch that and it splits the screen into stereograph view.

Slide the phone into the Cardboard (as indicated on the Cardboard's instructions) and you now have a VR experience of historic sites created by Encyclopedia Virginia!
