James Farmer Addressing Farmer Scholars
James L. Farmer, a civil rights leader who pioneered sit-in demonstrations during the 1940s and led the Freedom Riders of 1961, addresses the James Farmer Scholars at Mary Washington College (later University of Mary Washington) in 1988. Begun the year before, the program was designed to help prepare African American young people for college. Farmer was a Distinguished Professor of History at Mary Washington from 1985 to 1998. He died in 1999.
