School report for January 1, 1867.
This chart is part of a semi-annual report, dated January 1, 1867, submitted by Ralza M. Manly, superintendent of the Freedmen's Bureau schools in Virginia. According to his records, 192 schools were in operation at that time with an average student attendance of 8,879—and 926 of those pupils paid tuition. Of the 220 teachers, 63 of them were African American.
