Basil L. Gildersleeve
Basil L. Gildersleeve, professor of Greek and Hebrew at the University of Virginia, poses in front of an unidentified building in 1863. During the Civil War he served with the Confederate army in the summer, when school was out of session. Gildersleeve was wounded in the leg during a skirmish in the Shenandoah Valley in 1864 and limped thereafter. Of the incident he noted, "I lost my pocket Homer, I lost my pistol, I lost one of my horses and, finally, I came very near losing my life."
