"A Discourse of Virginia."
This is the title page of Edward Maria Wingfield's A Discourse of Virginia, an account of his experiences as a founding member of Jamestown as well as a defense of his leadership of the Council of Virginia. Wingfield originally wrote his text after returning to England in 1608. The manuscript was rediscovered by scholars in the mid-nineteenth century and edited by Charles Deane, a member of the American Antiquarian Society and the Massachusetts Historical Society. One hundred copies of the forty-five page text were privately printed in Boston in 1860.
