Views of Norfolk and Portsmouth From the Marine Hospital.
This 1851 lithograph portrays the bustling harbor of Hampton Roads, one of the largest natural harbors in the world. To the right is Norfolk, and on the far side of the harbor is Portsmouth. The steamboat Herald, seen navigating out of the harbor at left center, was built in Baltimore in 1842 and was used by the Baltimore Steam Packet Company for its regular service between Norfolk and Baltimore. The ship was dismantled in Albany in 1885.
