Wanted! 200 Negroes.
An 1862 broadside published at the direction of the Confederate general John C. Pemberton calls upon the planters in Lowndes County, Mississippi, and the surrounding area to lease out their slaves to build defensive fortifications. Planters were promised $1.25 per day for each slave they provided. The Confederate army would supply housing—"Tents or other shelter"—and experienced overseers would be in charge of the laborers. Owners would have to provide food for their slaves.
