Represents Our next door neighbor
A watercolor illustration created by Lewis Miller in his Sketchbook of Landscapes in the State of Virginia depicts African Americans at work. A woman at left spins wool; the man at center holds a farm implement in his right hand and, in his left hand, a banner touting "domestic & native industry"; the man at right grinds corn into hominy. At upper left is the Seal of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The inscription below the drawing reads, "O carry me back, O carry me back, to old Virginia," a refrain that predated, but is similar to, the song "Carry Me Back to Old Virginny" that was written in the 1870s.
