Thomas Claiborne
Thomas Claiborne, a planter from Brunswick County who served five terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, is the subject of this 1805 mezzotint and engraved portrait by Charles Balthazar Julien Févret de Saint-Mémin.
Saint-Mémin was a French nobleman who fled the French Revolution, came to the United States, and took up portraiture. Nearly 1,000 Americans sat for portraits by the artist, including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and John Marshall.
