Slave Purchases and Auctions
The December 26, 1787, edition of the Virginia Independent Chronicle contains these two slave-related announcements. The advertisement at top, placed by the Richmond slave firm Moses Austin & Company, seeks to find "One Hundred Negroes, from 12 to 30 years old" to sell to more lucrative markets. The slave firm notes that since the slaves will be leaving Virginia, "we shall not be particular respecting the character of any of them—Hearty and well made is all that is necessary." The advertisement, at bottom, announces the public auction of about fifteen slaves in Manchester to satisfy a financial judgment against Jacob Pleasants's estate.
