Outline of Pole Green Church
White beams outline the footprint of historic Pole Green Church in Hanover County. The original church, established in 1747 and known as the Meeting House, played a central role in the Great Awakening, the series of religious revivals that led to the disestablishment of the Church of England as the official church during the American Revolution. The Reverend Samuel Davies, the first non-Anglican minister permitted to preach in colonial Virginia, served as Pole Green's first pastor. Among his congregants was Patrick Henry. The church was destroyed by fire during a Civil War skirmish.
