The Patriotic Songster.
This is the title page of Benjamin L. Bogan's The Patriotic Songster: A Collection of the most approved Patriotic, and other Songs (1816). In the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, a songster was a small book of song lyrics. After the Civil War the term came to refer to an African American musician who performed ballads and dance tunes with banjo or guitar accompaniment.
