Old Dominion March
The Civil War–era composer Charles Chaky de Nordendorf dedicates his Old Dominion March to Confederate general William "Extra Billy" Smith, the governor-elect of Virginia, in 1863. Born in Vienna, de Nordendorf (originally Karl Sauer Csaky, edler von Nordendorf) came to Virginia during the war and taught music at the Danville Female College. He published more than eighty songs about the Confederacy and served briefly in the military, building fortifications. His wartime work earned him the nickname "Soldier-Songster of the Confederacy" in a 1974 article in Virginia Cavalcade.
