CSS Patrick Henry
The CSS Patrick Henry, part of the James River Squadron, is shown at anchor in this engraving from J. Thomas Scharf's History of the Confederate States Navy (1887). The steam-powered paddle wheel boat was originally a merchant ship named Yorktown that plied the route between Richmond and New York. After Virginia seceded on April 17, 1861, the boat was seized and became part of the Confederate navy. After seeing some action on the James River, the Patrick Henry was turned into a training ship in late 1863.
