Phillip Mongom Accused of Stealing Hogs (1660)

In this Northampton County Court ruling, dating to 1659–1660, the free African American and former slave Phillip Mongom (also Mongon) is accused of stealing hogs.

Upon Sum presumptious Susspittion that phillip Mongom negro hath Stoll hoggs as by the Relation of John Braddum and William Planner doth appeare, It is ordered that hee put in Security for his good behaviour for the future and pay Costs of Suit. It is Ordered that phillip Mongom negro shall pay for his presumptious actions used to the Court in throughing [throwing] hoggs eares on the Court table one hundred pounds of tobacco and Caske with Court Charges.
