In this notice from the Richmond Enquirer, published on February 22, 1811, the free black man Christopher McPherson informs readers that he has purchased a hack, or a horse-and-carriage for hire.

THE subscriber hereby gives notice that the new, strong and easy HACK, registered by the driver, John Townly, a white man, is kept in a house back of Mr. Robert Greenhow's store, on the Main street, near the Eagle Tavern—The driver is attentive, careful, and obedient. I APPEAL to the generous public, for all their aid & encouragement for the benefit of their humble servant,
