J. Sargeant Reynolds
J. Sargeant Reynolds, a member of the House of Delegates (1966–1967), a state senator (1968–1969), and lieutenant governor of Virginia (1970–1971), is the subject of this official portrait. A potential Democratic candidate for governor, Reynolds was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor in the summer of 1970 and died in June 1971, at the age of thirty-four, after contracting pneumonia. Richmond-born artist David Silvette painted the portrait in 1972.
