Rosenwald School in York County
This September 1921 photograph shows a Rosenwald school in York County in the final stages of construction. The photographer, Jackson Davis, captioned the image "York County Training School under construction (6-teacher Rosenwald school—good school)." Davis was an educational reformer who served as the first Agent for Negro Rural Schools for the Virginia State Department of Education; he later worked as a field agent for the General Education Board, a philanthropic entity funded by John D. Rockefeller that was devoted to improving education in the South. Davis made some 6,000 photographs of African American schools throughout the southeastern United States in the early twentieth century.
