Anne Spotswood

Anne Spotswood, wife of Alexander Spotswood, lieutenant governor of Virginia during the colonial era, holds a book in this modern oil portrait. The painting by Emma Morehead Whitfield was based on an earlier portrait destroyed during the 1926 fire at the Executive Mansion in Richmond. (That fire was sparked when the then-governor's son, Billy Trinkle, held a sparkler too close to the family's Christmas tree. His mother and one of his brothers had to leap from a window on the top floor to escape the blaze.)
