Tourists at Jamestown Tercentenary
This photo captures a crowd of tourists visiting the ruins of the Jamestown Tower during the 1907 celebration of the 300th anniversary of the founding of the Jamestown colony. This section of Jamestown Island had been acquired in 1893 by the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities (APVA), which was also the first group to call for the celebration of the Jamestown Ter-Centennial. While APVA did welcome tourists to the Jamestown site during the 1907 celebrations, the official Jamestown Ter-Centennial celebrations took place in Norfolk and focused on naval and commercial power.
