Barbara Johns Powell

Barbara Rose Johns was sixteen years old when she organized a student walkout at Robert Russa Moton High School in Farmville, Virginia. The school was the first high school for black students in Prince Edward County, but it offered facilities far inferior to those enjoyed by white students at nearby Farmville High School. The strike is widely considered to signal the start of the desegregation movement in America.
