William Faulkner, on the Lawn

Though he lived most of his life at his Rowan Oak house in Oxford, Mississippi, William Faulkner was writer-in-residence at the University of Virginia from 1957 until 1958, a position he accepted in part because his daughter and her family were living nearby. From 1961 until his death a year later, Faulkner taught American literature at the university. Portions of his lectures are recorded in Faulkner in the University (1959) and William Faulkner: Essays, Speeches and Public Letters (1966). He is photographed here on the lawn of the Academical Village at the University of Virginia.
