Welcome to the "Beta" site of Encyclopedia Virginia, an online resource being published by the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities that explores the commerce, history, culture, arts, and sciences of the Commonwealth. "Beta" means that we are adding more content and that the interface, design, search, and other technical functionalities (while largely in place) are still being refined. In the meantime, please explore the site and give us your feedback!

The Civilian Conservation Corps was a New Deal program designed to leverage the nation’s young unemployed workforce and stimulate the economy. The work centered on forest improvements, conservation of historical sites, and development of the state and federal park system. CCC camps like the one above, near Skyland along Skyline Drive, housed the workers that built the Blue Ridge Parkway and created the infrastructure to support Shenandoah National Park.
