Virginia governor Harry F. Byrd (left) and University of Virginia president Edwin Alderman (right), attend the university's commencement ceremonies. Byrd would depart the governor's mansion one year later, still with a long political career ahead of him. In 1933, his brief political hiatus ended when he was appointed to the United States Senate to replace Claude Swanson, who had been selected Secretary of the Navy.
