Senator Byrd Jr. and President Johnson
U.S. senator from Virginia Harry F. Byrd Jr. poses for a White House photograph with President Lyndon Baines Johnson. The photograph is signed: "To Harry Byrd, my best, LBJ." Byrd took over his father's Democratic Senate seat following Harry F. Byrd Sr.'s retirement in November 1965. In 1970, Byrd Jr. broke with the Democratic Party over a question of loyalty oaths, but successfully retained his Senate seat, running as an Independent in 1970 and 1976.
